Atari 2600 (VCS) & Atari 7800 Hub

MOS 6507, Stella TIA, 6532 RIOT & GCC MARIA workbench reference — 3.5mm Tip-Positive 9V power & 7805 alert, 6-Switch vs 4-Switch vs Jr. & 7800 selector, 4.7pF chiclet cap colour fix, UAV S-Video/Composite mod, and DB9 pinouts.

Atari 2600 3.5mm Tip-Positive 9V Jack Short Warning & Atari 7800 4013 Flip-Flop Power Latch!

Every Atari 2600 (Heavy Sixer, Light Sixer, 4-Switch, and 2600 Jr.) uses a 3.5mm Mono TS Phone Plug rated at 9V DC @ 500mA+ with Tip = POSITIVE (+9V) and Sleeve = NEGATIVE (GND)! Because a 3.5mm TS tip momentarily touches the sleeve contact as it slides into the socket, NEVER insert or remove the 3.5mm plug from the back of the Atari 2600 while the wall brick is plugged into mains AC, or you will dead-short the transformer secondary! Meanwhile, the Atari 7800 uses a proprietary rectangular 2-pin blue/black power plug and a CMOS CD4013 flip-flop electronic soft-power switch that stays powered whenever the wall brick is plugged in!

Atari 7800 ProSystemProprietary 2-Pin Flat D-Keyed9V DC @ 1.0A (Looking into console socket w/ flat bottom: Left = GND, Right = +9V)

2 Mandatory 2600 Tune-Up Kit

  • Every Atari 2600 on the bench should receive three standard preventative replacements:
  • 1. 7805 Voltage Regulator: Original Atari 7805s run scorching hot without a heatsink (or with a tiny U-clip) and drift down to 4.5V, causing wavy video and random crashes. Replace with a fresh L7805CV + clip-on TO-220 heatsink!
  • 2. 2200 µF 16V Axial Filter Cap (C241): Replace with a fresh 2200 µF 25V axial electrolytic.
  • 3. 4.7 µF Reset Timing Cap: A dried-out 4.7µF electrolytic cap on the 6532 RIOT `/RES` pin causes the 2600 to boot to vertical bars until you flick the power switch twice!

3 Green Mylar "Chiclet" Capacitors

  • Instead of ceramic disc caps, Atari used rectangular green Mylar "chiclet" capacitors and silver tubular polystyrene capacitors (C206, C207, C209 — 4.7pF to 820pF) in the TIA audio/colour delay circuit.
  • The heat from a soldering iron or aging board warps the internal foil of those polystyrene caps, turning colour video into permanent Black-and-White! Replace styrene caps with stable C0G / NP0 ceramic capacitors.

Architectural Summary: Atari 2600 vs. Atari 7800

"Racing the Beam" with 128 bytes of RAM on the 2600 vs. Display List List (DLL) sprite DMA on the 7800

Atari 2600 Trio (CPU/TIA/RIOT) MOS 6507 @ 1.19 MHz (28-pin 6502 w/ 13-bit 8KB address bus & no interrupts) + Stella TIA (`CO10444` line-buffer graphics & 2-ch audio) + MOS 6532 RIOT (128 Bytes RAM + Timer + I/O)
Atari 7800 Trio (SALLY/MARIA) SALLY 6502C (`CO14806` @ 1.79 MHz w/ `/HALT` pin) + GCC MARIA (`CO24674` Display List DMA graphics processor, 160/320×240, 100+ sprites) + TIA/6532 backward-compatibility mode
Audio & Cartridge Audio Internal 2-channel polynomial TIA audio on both systems; Atari 7800 Cartridge Pin 3 (`AUDIO IN`) mixes onboard Atari POKEY (Ballblazer, Commando) or Yamaha YM2151 synth chips!
Memory & Media 2600: 128 Bytes internal RAM (inside 6532 RIOT at `$0080–$00FF`) + 24-Pin Cartridge Slot | 7800: 4 KB high-speed SRAM (2×2KB `6116`) + 36-Pin Cartridge Slot

Atari 2600: Heavy Sixer, Light Sixer, 4-Switch & 2600 Jr. 1977 – 1991 • Socketed 3-Chip Architecture

On almost every 6-Switch (`CX2600` two-board split design) and 4-Switch (`CX2600A` single-board woody / Darth Vader), all three custom 40/28-pin DIP ICs — the MOS 6507 CPU, the MOS 6532 RIOT, and the Atari TIA (`CO10444D` NTSC / `CO11903` PAL) — are factory socketed! That makes swapping and isolating a bad chip on the workbench fast and solder-free.

Composite & S-Video Upgrades (CleanComp / UAV Board)

  • Because the Stella TIA outputs separate digital Luminance bits (`LUM0, LUM1, LUM2` on Pins 8, 7, 5/6), Composite Sync (`CSYNC` Pin 2), Color Phase (`COL` Pin 9), and 2-channel Audio (`AUD0, AUD1` Pins 12, 13) before they ever hit the noisy transistor RF mixer (`Q201/Q202`), installing an Ultimate Atari Video (UAV) or CleanComp board produces razor-sharp S-Video and Composite video!

Diagnostic Flowcharts & Common Fault Decision Trees

Pinpointing TIA vs. 6532 RIOT vs. 6507 CPU failures in minutes

📺

1. Game Plays in Black & White Only (Even With TV Colour Switch Set to COLOR)

Symptom: Picture is sharp and sound works, but all colours are greyscale regardless of the B/W switch position.

Diagnostic Decision Tree

  1. Adjust the 500 kΩ Colour Delay Trimpot (`R213 / R210`): Locate the large circular plastic potentiometer wheel on the motherboard and gently rotate it with a non-metallic trim tool while watching the screen. Oxidation on the wiper often drops the TIA Pin 9 colour delay bias!
  2. Replace the Silver Polystyrene "Chiclet" Capacitor (`C209 / C206` 4.7pF–68pF): Right next to the colour delay pot sits a tiny silver/clear tubular polystyrene capacitor connected to TIA Pin 9 (`DEL`). When heat-damaged, it kills the 3.58MHz/4.43MHz colour phase shift completely.
🎮

2. Joystick Directions Dead vs. Fire Button / Paddles Dead (RIOT vs. TIA Rule!)

Symptom: Either Up/Down/Left/Right don't work (while Fire works), OR Fire/Paddles don't work (while Directions work).

Diagnostic Decision Tree

  1. Up / Down / Left / Right Go to the 6532 RIOT Chip! On the Atari 2600 (and 7800), DB9 Pins 1, 2, 3, 4 wire directly to the 8-bit `PA0–PA7` I/O port (`SWCHA $0280`) of the 40-pin MOS 6532 RIOT chip. If directions are stuck or dead with a known-good joystick (and DB9 solder joints are intact), replace the `6532 RIOT`!
  2. Fire Button (Pin 6) & Paddles (Pins 5 & 9) Go to the TIA Chip! DB9 Pin 6 (`INPT4/INPT5`) and Paddle Pins 5 & 9 (`INPT0–INPT3`) wire directly to the 40-pin Stella TIA chip. If Fire or Paddles are stuck/dead, check the ESD capacitor array (`C202–C205`) or replace the `TIA`!
