Sega CD / Mega-CD (Model 1 & 2) Hub

12.5MHz 68000 Sub-CPU, 315-5548 Scaling ASIC & Ricoh RF5C164 PCM workbench reference — F301 2.5A Pico fuse alert, Model 1 SMD capacitor corrosion, motorized tray timing, Sony KSS-210A / Optima-6 lasers, and 60-pin expansion pinouts.

Blown F301 2.5A Pico Fuse, 9V DC Centre-Negative PSU & Model 1 SMD Capacitor Corrosion!

Both the Sega CD Model 1 (MK-4101) and Sega CD Model 2 (MK-4102) require a 9V–10V DC 1.2A Centre-NEGATIVE (⊖) power supply (MK-1602, 5.5×2.1mm plug) — EVEN WHEN PAIRED WITH A GENESIS MODEL 2! Because the Genesis Model 2 uses a Centre-POSITIVE plug (MK-2103), thousands of owners accidentally plug their Genesis 2 power brick into the back of their Sega CD, or mate the 60-pin expansion connector while plugged in — immediately blowing the green axial 2.5A 125V Littelfuse Pico II Fuse (F301) on the Sega CD power board!

1 F301 2.5A Pico Fuse Location

  • Symptom: Genesis powers on to a black screen (or boots an inserted cartridge as if no Sega CD is attached); Sega CD LEDs never light up.
  • Model 2 Location: Green resistor-like axial fuse labeled F301 (2.5A) on the bottom-right corner of the mainboard near the rear DC jack and `TR301` (`2SB1132` / `Rohms` switching transistor).
  • Model 1 Location: On the vertical internal Power Supply / Audio daughterboard at the rear-left of the chassis (`F301 2.5A`). Always check that reverse-protection diode `D301` hasn't shorted dead before replacing `F301`!

2 Model 1 Mandatory SMD Recap

  • Front-Loading Model 1 (HAA-2910 / MK-4101): Uses 23 surface-mount electrolytic capacitors across its main logic PCB that leak corrosive electrolyte onto the 160-pin 315-5548 custom ASIC and BIOS ROM traces!
  • If left unrecapped, leaked electrolyte eats through the fine-pitch vias under the BIOS chip, causing "Garbled Planets / Corrupted BIOS Logo" or freezing on `"CHECKING DISC"`.
  • (By contrast, the top-loading Sega CD Model 2 uses through-hole radial capacitors on most revisions that rarely leak.)

3 Rechargeable ML2032 vs. FRAM Mod

  • The Sega CD uses a rechargeable 3.0V ML2032 (or VL2020) lithium-manganese battery soldered to the motherboard to keep its internal 8KB Save RAM (`IC10` / `IC5`) alive.
  • NEVER solder a standard non-rechargeable CR2032 into the Sega CD battery holder without adding a 1N4148 blocking diode, as the charging circuit will overheat a primary CR2032! Better yet, replace the 28-pin SOP 8KB SRAM with a non-volatile FM18W08 FRAM chip and remove the battery completely.

Architectural Summary & Model 1 vs. Model 2 Selector

How the Sega CD adds a second 12.5MHz 68000 CPU, hardware sprite scaling/rotation, and 8-channel PCM audio to the Genesis

Sub-CPU (12.5 MHz 68000) Motorola MC68HC000 @ 12.5 MHz — runs in parallel with the Genesis 7.67 MHz 68000 and 3.58 MHz Z80A (20+ MHz combined processing!)
Graphics ASIC (315-5548) Sega 315-5548 Custom ASIC — hardware affine texture scaling, rotation, and stamp-map rendering into 256 KB dual-banked Word RAM before DMAing tiles to the Genesis VDP
Audio (Ricoh RF5C164 + CD-DA) Ricoh RF5C164 8-channel 8-bit PCM sample synthesizer (up to 32 kHz w/ 64 KB dedicated wave RAM) + 16-bit 44.1 kHz Redbook CD-DA stereo mixed via Expansion Pins B1 & B3
Memory & Optical Drive 512 KB Program RAM + 256 KB Word RAM + 64 KB PCM RAM + 16 KB CD Cache + 8 KB Backup SRAM; 1x (150 KB/s) Sony / JVC / Funai CD-ROM Drive

Sega CD / Mega-CD Model 1 (MK-4101 / HAA-2910) 1991 – 1992 • Sony KSS-210A / JVC Drive

Designed to sit directly underneath a Genesis / Mega Drive Model 1, the front-loading Model 1 features illuminated green (`READY`) and red (`ACCESS`) front LEDs, a motorized CD tray, and five internal PCBs. Most Model 1 units use a Sony CD mechanism with the classic KSS-210A (or KSS-240A) laser pickup, while later production runs use a JVC `Optima-5 / Optima-6` mechanism.

Model 1 Motorized Tray Belt & Limit-Switch Timing Fix

  • Symptom — Tray Ejects Immediately After Closing, or Makes a Loud Grinding Sound: The rubber loading belt (`25mm–27mm Ø × 1.5mm square`) has stretched so the laser sled fails to lift high enough to trip the two Leaf Limit Switches (`SW1/SW2`), OR someone removed the tray without aligning the white cam gear timing mark!
  • Fix: Replace the loading belt, clean the two leaf switch contacts at the front of the CD mechanism with DeoxIT, and align the small hole on the white main cam gear with the alignment arrow on the chassis while the laser clamp is fully lowered.

Diagnostic Flowcharts & Common Fault Decision Trees

Step-by-step troubleshooting for no-power, disc-read failures, and missing CD audio

⚠

1. Genesis Powers On to Black Screen (or Ignores Attached Sega CD)

Symptom: Turning on the Genesis with no cartridge inserted produces a dead black screen instead of the Sega CD planet/starfield BIOS.

Diagnostic Decision Tree

  1. Test Fuse F301 (2.5A Pico II) & Switching Transistor TR301: Remember that the Sega CD has NO physical power switch of its own — it waits for the Genesis to supply +5V on Expansion Pin A30 to turn on transistor `TR301` and feed the `7805` regulator! If `F301` is blown, the Genesis sees `/DISK` (Pin B27) pulled low by the unpowered Sega CD and hangs on a black screen waiting for the dead Sub-CPU!
  2. Clean the 60-Contact Genesis Side Expansion Fingers: Use a white Mars Plastic eraser and 99% IPA on both sides of the Genesis expansion edge PCB until bright gold.
💿

2. Boots to BIOS Screen, Stuck on "CHECKING DISC" or "NO DISC"

Symptom: Planet BIOS animation and music play normally, but inserting a CD never spins up or drops to the CD player with "NO DISC".

Diagnostic Decision Tree

  1. Verify Lid Switch (Model 2) / Tray Limit Switch (Model 1) & Inner Sled Limit Switch: When the lid closes, the laser sled must move inward until it clicks the inner limit switch, then pulse the laser diode twice to detect focus reflection. If the plastic sled gears are gummed up with hardened white lithium grease, clean and relubricate with PTFE grease.
  2. Identify Pickup (`Sony KSS-210A` vs `JVC Optima-6`): Clean the objective lens with 99% IPA; if focus still fails or skips on FMV video, replace the `KSS-210A` or `Optima-6` pickup (and recap the CD servo board on Sony mechanisms!).
