Epyx 16-bit Suzy blitter & 4MHz 65SC02 Mikey workbench reference — critical Q12 MOSFET / Zener D13 +9V-to-+5V overvoltage trap, flex membrane power-on bypass, SMD capacitor recap, and 2.5mm ComLynx 16-player UART pinouts.
CRITICAL ATARI LYNX +9V OVERVOLTAGE TRAP (Q12 MOSFET / U6 CD4069 / D13 Zener)!
STOP BEFORE POWERING ON AN UNTESTED ATARI LYNX! Unlike almost every other console of its era, the Atari Lynx does NOT use a 7805 linear regulator! Instead, it uses a discrete switching buck regulator built from a 5.1V Zener diode (D13), a CMOS hex inverter (U6 CD4069UB), and a power MOSFET (Q12 Si9400 / MDT3055 on Lynx II; Q7/Q8 on Lynx I). When the Zener diode opens or MOSFET Q12 shorts Drain-to-Source, the full +9V DC from the wall adapter or 6× AA batteries is dumped straight onto the +5.0V logic rail — permanently frying the irreplaceable custom Mikey and Suzy chips in under a second!
1 Mandatory Power Stage Rebuild
- Always Replace the Power Trio Together: On every Lynx I and Lynx II that enters your workshop, proactively replace:
Q12(Lynx II) /Q8(Lynx I): Power MOSFET (`Si9400` / `MDT3055`).U6(`CD4069UB` SOP-14): Unbuffered CMOS Hex Inverter that oscillates to drive the MOSFET gate.D13(`1N5231B` 5.1V Zener Diode): Sets the +5.0V feedback reference.Q11&Q7(`2N3906` / `2N3904`): Soft-power latch transistors. (Or replace the entire circuit with a modern drop-in 5V switching regulator module!)
2 5.1V Zener / Crowbar Overvoltage Mod
- To guarantee that a future MOSFET failure can never kill Mikey and Suzy, solder a high-wattage
5.6V 5W Zener Diode(1N5339B) (or TVS diode + polyfuse) directly across the +5V output rail (CapacitorC41positive leg on Lynx II /C39on Lynx I) and Ground! - If the rail ever exceeds 5.6V, the Zener clamps the voltage and trips the polyfuse before Mikey/Suzy see overvoltage.
3 ~100V CCFL Backlight & SMD Recap
- Like the Sega Game Gear, the Atari Lynx uses a miniature high-voltage CCFL fluorescent tube driven by step-up transformer `T1` — avoid touching the backlight electrodes while powered on!
- Replace all 15–17 surface-mount and axial electrolytic capacitors across the motherboard (especially the `470 µF` and `220 µF` power/audio caps).
Architectural Summary & Lynx I vs. Lynx II Selector
Designed by RJ Mical and Dave Needle (creators of the Amiga chipset & 3DO) as the Epyx "Handy"
Atari Lynx Model I (PAG-0201 / C302320) 1989 • Original Epyx "Handy" Form Factor
The original wide, wedge-shaped Lynx I (`PAG-0201`) uses an 84-pin PLCC Suzy and 68-pin PLCC Mikey (`C104129` / `C104021`), outputs summed Mono audio through its 3.5mm headphone jack, and uses a fragile 14-pin green mylar button flex ribbon folded under the front control panel.
Why a Lynx Never Turns On Without a Cartridge Inserted!
- Before diagnosing a "dead" Atari Lynx I or II, always insert a known-good Lynx game cartridge first!
- Inside every Lynx cartridge, Pin 1 (`GND`) and Pin 31 (`SW_GND`) are tied together. Until a cartridge is seated in the 34-pin slot, the ground return for the soft-power latch circuit (`Q7/Q11`) is completely disconnected!
Atari Lynx Model II (PAG-0401 / C104250) 1991 • Stereo Panning + Backlight Sleep Button
Redesigned in 1991 with rubberized hand grips, a side-loading cartridge bay, a power LED indicator, and a Backlight Off button (press `Option 1 + Pause` or the dedicated Backlight button to turn off the power-hungry CCFL tube while pausing!), the Lynx II also revised the Mikey chip (`C104255`) to add hardware 4-channel Stereo Panning and Attenuation registers (`$FD40–$FD50`) over the 3.5mm stereo headphone jack.
Modern IPS LCD Upgrades (BennVenn / McWill / CleanScreen)
- Replacing the blurry, power-hungry CCFL LCD module on a Lynx I or II with a modern backlit IPS kit removes the high-voltage CCFL inverter load and optionally adds a VGA or composite TV-out port.
Diagnostic Flowcharts & Common Fault Decision Trees
How to bypass the 14-pin button flex ribbon with tweezers to isolate a dead power switch vs. a dead power regulator
1. Lynx Will Not Turn On (Even With Cartridge Inserted) — The Pin 9 & 10 Tweezer Test!
Diagnostic Decision Tree
- Step 1 — Verify +5V Before Touching Anything: First check that MOSFET `Q12` isn't shorted Drain-to-Source!
- Step 2 — The 14-Pin Flex Ribbon Tweezer Jump Test: In 50% of "dead" Lynx II handhelds, the carbon trace for the `ON` button inside the 14-pin green mylar button flex ribbon has cracked! With a cartridge inserted and power connected, momentarily bridge Pin 9 (`Power On`) and Pin 10 (`Ground`) on the 14-pin ZIF flex connector (`J2`) on the motherboard with metal tweezers (or bridge the two legs of capacitor
C42on Lynx II /C40on Lynx I). - Step 3 — Interpret the Result: If the Lynx powers right on when bridging Pins 9 & 10, your motherboard is fine and you simply need a replacement 14-pin Lynx button flex membrane! If it still refuses to power on, rebuild the `Q12 + U6 (CD4069) + D13 (5.1V Zener) + Q11/Q7` power regulator stage.
2. Boots to "INSERT GAME" Screen Despite Cartridge Being Seated
Diagnostic Decision Tree
- How Lynx Cartridge Addressing Works: To save pins on the 34-pin cartridge slot, the Atari Lynx uses a serial ripple counter (`AUDIN` / shift register inside the cartridge or Mikey address strobes) to read 256-byte blocks into the 64KB DRAM and verify the RSA-encrypted header via Mikey's internal 512-byte boot ROM!
- Clean the 34-Pin Cartridge Connector & Check Suzy/Mikey Solder Joints: Clean the curved or flat cartridge contacts with DeoxIT D5. If every cartridge shows `"INSERT GAME"`, inspect the PLCC-68 `Mikey` and PLCC-84 `Suzy` pins under a microscope for hairline cracked solder joints caused by handheld flex!
