Atari 800XL 10-Minute S-Video Chroma Restoration & C56 Sharpness Fix

The Atari 800, 1200XL, 800XL, 65XE, and 130XE use a 5-pin 180-degree DIN monitor socket whose pinout is 100% identical to the early 5-pin Commodore 64 A/V socket — plus Chrominance on Pin 5 (connected from the factory on the Atari 800, 65XE, and 130XE, and easily restored with a 1-wire jumper on the 800XL!).

  • Step 1 — Restore S-Video Chroma on Pin 5 (800XL): Open the 800XL and locate the 5-pin Monitor DIN jack (J2). Solder a short insulated wire (or a 75 Ω–100 Ω resistor + 100 nF cap in series) from the junction of resistors R67 and R68 directly to Pin 5 of the Monitor DIN jack.
  • Step 2 — Remove Blurring Capacitor C56 (800XL): Locate small ceramic disc capacitor C56 right next to the monitor jack and snip one leg — Atari added C56 to intentionally blur composite artifacts, and removing it makes 40-column text dramatically sharper!
