Building a Safe Modern USB-to-Atari XL/XE +5V Power Cable
Unlike the Commodore 64 (which uses both +5 V DC and 9 V AC on its 7-pin DIN), the Atari 600XL, 800XL, 65XE, 130XE, and XEGS run 100% off a single regulated +5.0 V DC (1.5 A–2.0 A) supply! Atari paralleled three pins for +5 V (Pins 1, 4, 6) and three pins for Ground (Pins 2, 3, 5) to spread current across the DIN contacts.
- Because the Atari 800XL and 130XE only require regulated +5.0 V DC (~1.0 A), you can build a rock-solid modern power cable using a heavy-gauge 18/20 AWG USB-A cable and a 7-pin DIN male plug: bridge USB +5 V (Red) to DIN Pins 1, 4, and 6, and bridge USB GND (Black) to DIN Pins 2, 3, and 5! Plug into any reputable 5 V 2.0 A USB power adapter.
- Note on Atari 400, 800, 1200XL, and 1050 Disk Drive: Those earlier models use a simple 2-conductor barrel jack requiring 9.0 V AC (NOT DC!) from a 9 V AC 31 VA (CO14319 / CA017964) transformer!
