Why Passive Oric RGB SCART Cables Show a Black Screen (And the Easy Fix!)
The 5-pin 180-degree DIN (DIN 41524) is used in two distinct ways across European 8-bit machines: on the Oric-1 and Oric Atmos it carries native 15.6 kHz Red, Green, Blue, and Composite Sync directly from the HCS10017 ULA; on the Dragon 32 and Dragon 64 it carries Composite Video, Luminance, and Mono Audio.
- Oric-1 / Atmos RGB SCART Issue: Because all 5 pins on the Oric's video DIN are occupied by R, G, B, CSYNC, and GND, there is NO +5 V pin on the Oric video socket to drive SCART Pin 16 (RGB Fast Blanking, 1–3 V). Without 1–3 V on SCART Pin 16, your TV ignores R/G/B and displays a black screen!
- Oric SCART Fix #1 (External USB +5 V): Wire a standard USB-A plug's +5 V line through a 150 Ω resistor to SCART Pin 16 (and USB GND to SCART Pin 18).
- Oric SCART Fix #2 (Internal Pin 2 Mod): Bridge a 150 Ω resistor internally from the Oric's +5 V rail to a spare contact or use an active sync-rectifier cable.
- Dragon 32 / 64 Composite Cable: A standard 5-pin Commodore 64 Composite RCA cable (Pin 4 = Yellow Video, Pin 3 = White/Red Audio, Pin 2 = GND) works out-of-the-box on every Dragon 32 and Dragon 64!
