Common uses and repair diagnostics
The 48-pin MOS 7360 (HMOS-1) and 8360 (HMOS-2) Text Editing Device (TED) combines the functions of the VIC-II, SID, and CIA into a single chip for the Commodore 16, C116, and Plus/4. It divides the 17.734 MHz (PAL) or 14.318 MHz (NTSC) crystal down to generate the CPU clock (PHI0 on Pin 12, switching automatically between 0.89 MHz during active video and 1.77 MHz during borders/blanking!), generates 40x25 text and 320x200 graphics with a 121-colour palette (15 hues x 8 luminances + black), drives DRAM /RAS and /CAS, provides three 16-bit timers and a 2-voice square/noise audio generator (Pin 21), and latches the keyboard/joystick matrix (K0-K7). WARNING: Always fit a 48-pin heatsink and never hot-plug joysticks!
Used in the Commodore 16, Commodore 116, and Commodore Plus/4. Uniquely, every 7360 and 8360 TED chip contains both PAL (312 lines) and NTSC (262 lines) timing tables on the same silicon die (selected by bit 6 of register $FF07 and the motherboard crystal).
- Scope Pin 12 (PHI0) first on a black-screen C16 or Plus/4: if the crystal is oscillating on Pin 6 (DOTCLK) but no PHI0 clock leaves Pin 12, the TED chip is dead.
- Never hot-plug joysticks into the Mini-DIN ports: Pins 24-31 (K0-K7) and Pins 38-39 (D1-D2) connect directly to the joystick ports with no ESD protection!
- Bond a 48-pin copper heatsink onto the TED chip and leave the top tin RF shield cover off so heat can escape.
