Building a Universal Sega Saturn RGB SCART or S-Video Cable
The Sega Saturn outputs some of the sharpest 240p and 480i RGB and S-Video signals of any 32-bit console via its rear 10-pin Mini-DIN port. Unlike the Mega Drive, the Saturn motherboard already includes the 75 Ω series termination resistors on the Red, Green, Blue, Luma, Chroma, and Composite lines right after the video encoder — meaning a Saturn RGB SCART cable only needs 220 µF AC-coupling capacitors in series on R, G, and B.
- Do NOT add extra 75 Ω resistors on R/G/B: Because the Sega Saturn already has 75 Ω series resistors on the motherboard before the 10-pin Mini-DIN, adding another 75 Ω resistor in the cable will cut brightness in half! Only place a 220 µF 10V electrolytic capacitor in series on Pin 7 (Red), Pin 6 (Green), and Pin 5 (Blue).
- Use Sync-on-Luma (Pin 8) for Universal PAL/NTSC Compatibility: Wiring Pin 8 (Luma) to SCART Pin 20 gives clean, interference-free sync on every NTSC and PAL Saturn without risking the PAL Pin 4 +12V trap.
- Outer Metal Shell Ground: Just like the Genesis Model 2 9-pin Mini-DIN, 0V Ground is carried on the outer circular metal shield of the 10-pin plug.
