Mega Drive 2 / Nomad RGB SCART Wiring & Shield Grounding Note
With the 1993 release of the redesigned Sega Mega Drive II / Genesis Model 2 (MK-1631), Sega replaced the bulky 8-pin horseshoe DIN with a compact 9-pin Mini-DIN connector that finally included both Left and Right stereo audio channels right on the rear A/V port. This same 9-pin Mini-DIN pinout is used on the Sega 32X, Sega CDX / Multi-Mega, Sega Nomad handheld, JVC X'Eye, and Genesis 3.
- Where is Ground on the 9-Pin Mini-DIN? All 9 inner pins carry active signals — 0V Ground is carried exclusively on the outer circular metal shield ring of the Mini-DIN plug! Make sure your cable hood solders a heavy braid wire firmly to the Mini-DIN metal barrel.
- RGB & CSYNC Passive Components: Just like the Model 1, place a 75 Ω resistor and 220 µF capacitor in series on Pin 7 (Red), Pin 3 (Green), and Pin 1 (Blue), plus a 470 Ω resistor and 220 µF capacitor in series on Pin 4 (CSYNC).
- Building a Sega 32X Conversion / Patch Cable: Connect Pins 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9 and the outer Shield 1-to-1 between two 9-pin Mini-DIN male plugs, and leave Pin 5 (+5V) completely disconnected!
