NTSC vs PAL SNES / N64 RGB SCART & S-Video Cable Rules

Introduced with the 1990 Super Famicom / SNES and carried forward onto the AV Famicom (HVC-101), Virtual Boy (power tap), Nintendo 64 (NUS-001), and Nintendo GameCube (DOL-001), the 12-pin Nintendo Multi-Out is one of the most versatile video connectors in gaming history. However, Nintendo changed the internal motherboard components connected to Pins 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, and 8 across regions and console generations — meaning an NTSC SNES RGB SCART cable, a PAL SNES RGB SCART cable, and a PAL GameCube RGB SCART cable each require different passive components inside the SCART hood.

  • NTSC SNES / Super Famicom / Modded N64 RGB SCART: Place a 220 µF 10V electrolytic capacitor (+ leg toward console) in series on Pin 1 (Red), Pin 2 (Green), and Pin 4 (Blue). Use either Pin 7 (Sync-on-Luma, safest across all consoles) or Pin 3 (TTL CSYNC through a 470 Ω series resistor) to SCART Pin 20.
  • PAL SNES RGB SCART: PAL SNES motherboards (SNSP-CPU-01 / 02) already have internal AC coupling capacitors on R/G/B, but bias the lines too high (~3V DC). A true PAL SNES SCART cable requires a 75 Ω resistor from each R, G, and B line to Ground (Pin 5) inside the SCART plug, and MUST take sync from Pin 7 (Luma) or Pin 9 (CVBS) because PAL Pin 3 is +12V!
  • Nintendo 64 (NUS-001) Stock vs RGB Modded: Stock N64 consoles do NOT connect R, G, or B (Pins 1, 2, 4) inside the console — use an S-Video cable (Pins 7 & 8) or install a THS7314/THS7374 RGB amp (on early NUS-CPU-01/02/03/04 boards) or Tim Worthington N64RGB board.
  • PAL N64 S-Video Quirk: On PAL N64 consoles (NUS-CPU(P)-01), Nintendo omitted the S-Video Luma/Chroma components on the motherboard (or biased Chroma differently); use a PAL-specific N64 S-Video cable or RGB mod.
