Powering an Amstrad CPC 464 or 6128 Without the Original Monitor
Originally powered from the CTM640/GT65 monitor via captive flying leads, the Amstrad CPC 464 requires a single regulated +5.0 V DC (1.5–2.0 A, Centre-Positive) barrel plug, while the disk-equipped CPC 664 and CPC 6128 require a second lead with a 3.5 mm mono mini-jack (Tip = +12.0 V DC, Sleeve = GND) to power the internal 3-inch floppy drive motor. Meanwhile, the Amstrad-built ZX Spectrum +2A, +2B, and +3 use a 6-pin circular DIN power socket.
- Powering a CPC 464 from USB / 5V PSU: Because the CPC 464 only needs +5.0 V DC (Centre-Positive, ~1.2 A), a high-quality USB-to-5.5x2.1mm centre-positive cable plugged into a 5.0 V 2.4 A USB wall adapter runs a CPC 464 cleanly!
- Powering a CPC 6128 + Gotek from a Dual +5V/+12V Arcade/Mean Well PSU: Wire +5.0 V and GND to the 5.5x2.1mm barrel plug (Power In), and wire +12.0 V (Tip) and GND (Sleeve) to the 3.5mm mono mini-jack (12V DC) so the internal 3-inch disc drive motor spins.
