Amstrad CPC vs. BBC Micro RGB SCART Cable Resistor & +5V/+12V Pass-Through Guide
Both the Amstrad CPC family (CPC 464, 664, 6128) and the Acorn family (BBC Micro Model B, B+, Master 128, and Acorn Electron) use a 6-pin 240° circular DIN socket (DIN 45322) for RGB output, but with different pin mappings and voltage levels: the Amstrad Gate Array outputs 3-state ternary (Low/Mid/High) RGB for 27 colours, while the BBC Micro Video ULA outputs 5 V TTL digital RGB.
- BBC Micro / Acorn Electron RGB SCART Cable: Put a 270 Ω to 330 Ω resistor in series with Pin 1 (Red -> SCART 15), Pin 2 (Green -> SCART 11), and Pin 3 (Blue -> SCART 7) to drop 5 V TTL to 0.7 Vpp. Put a 470 Ω resistor in series with Pin 4 (CSYNC -> SCART 20), and wire Pin 6 (+5 V) through a 180 Ω resistor to SCART Pin 16 (RGB blanking).
- Amstrad CPC 464 / 6128 RGB SCART Cable: Because the CPC already has internal series resistors on R, G, B, wire Pins 1, 2, 3 directly (or via 100 Ω protection resistors) to SCART Pins 15, 11, 7, and wire Pin 4 (/SYNC) via a 330 Ω–470 Ω resistor to SCART Pin 20. Leave DIN Pin 6 (Luminance) disconnected for RGB SCART!
- Amstrad CPC +5V / +12V Pass-Through & SCART Pin 16 Blanking: Unlike the BBC Micro, the CPC 6-pin DIN carries NO +5V or +12V rail (the original CTM640/GT64 monitor sent +5V DC to the CPC via a separate captive 2.1mm barrel lead, plus a 3.5mm +12V lead for the 664/6128 disk drive). To auto-switch a SCART TV into RGB mode, feed +5V from an inline 2.1mm DC pass-through tee (or USB plug) through a 180 Ω resistor into SCART Pin 16 (produces ~1.5V across 75 Ω), and optionally feed +5V/+12V to SCART Pin 8. Wire a 3.5 mm stereo jack plug from the CPC's side STEREO socket into SCART Pins 6 (Left), 2 (Right), and 4 (Audio GND).
