Full Pin Assignment & Wiring Reference
| Pin | Signal Name | Direction | Electrical Spec / Role | Wire Colour / SCART / Adapter Target |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | AUDIO OUT (MONO) | Out | Mono Audio Output (linked to Pin 6 on most revisions) | White/Red RCA (or use Pin 6) |
| 2 | GND (0 V Ground) | GND | 0 V Video, Sync & Audio Common Ground | Black / All SCART Grounds |
| 3 | COMPOSITE VIDEO (CVBS) | Out | 1.0 Vpp 75 Ω Composite Video Output | Yellow RCA / Composite SCART Pin 20 |
| 4 | ANALOG BLUE (B) | Out | Sony CXA1145 Blue Output (requires 75 Ω + 220 µF in series inside SCART hood) | SCART Pin 7 via 75 Ω + 220 µF |
| 5 | +5V DC | Pwr | +5.0 V DC Regulated Output (powers RF modulator & SCART Pin 16 blanking) | SCART Pin 16 via 180 Ω resistor |
| 6 | AUDIO OUT (MONO) | Out | Primary Mono Audio Output (~1 Vpp) | SCART Pins 2 & 6 (if not using front 3.5mm stereo lead) |
| 7 | CSYNC (TTL Sync) | Out | 5.0 Vpp TTL Composite Sync Output (DO NOT wire straight to 75 Ω SCART!) | SCART Pin 20 via 470 Ω + 220 µF cap |
| 8 | ANALOG RED (R) & Center Pin = GREEN (G) | Out | Outer Pin 8 = Analog Red (via 75 Ω + 220 µF) | Note: Center Pin is Pin 8/G on some diagrams (Green = Top/Center) | Red -> SCART Pin 15; Green -> SCART Pin 11 (via 75 Ω + 220 µF) |
Building a Jailbar-Free Mega Drive 1 / Master System RGB SCART Cable
Both the Sega Master System (Power Base MK-3000) and the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis Model 1 (MK-1601) use a Sony CXA1145 (or Fujitsu MB3514) video encoder driving an 8-pin 262° horseshoe DIN socket on the rear panel. Because the CXA1145 outputs un-terminated TTL-buffered RGB and 5V TTL Composite Sync directly to the DIN pins, your RGB SCART cable must contain a 75 Ω series resistor AND a 220 µF series capacitor on each Red, Green, and Blue line, plus a 470 Ω attenuator + 220 µF capacitor on Pin 7 (CSYNC).
- Standard DIN 45326 Pin Numbering Note: Looking into the rear female socket on the console, the three bottom pins are Pin 1 (left), Pin 2 (bottom center, GND), Pin 3 (right, CVBS); the middle row is Pin 4 (left, Blue) and Pin 5 (right, +5V); the top row is Pin 6 (left, Audio) and Pin 7 (right, CSYNC); and the center pin is Pin 8 (Green, with Red on the upper-middle pin depending on IEC vs DIN numbering — always verify continuity with Pin 2 GND at the bottom!).
- Mandatory 75 Ω + 220 µF on R, G, and B: Unlike the Mega Drive 2 (which has 75 Ω termination resistors on the motherboard on some revisions), the Mega Drive 1 and Master System connect the CXA1145 RGB buffer pins almost directly to the DIN socket. Place a 75 Ω 1/4W resistor AND a 220 µF 10V capacitor in series on Red, Green, and Blue.
- Mandatory 470 Ω + 220 µF on CSYNC (Pin 7): Using raw 5V TTL CSYNC without a 470 Ω series resistor causes heavy vertical colour-subcarrier jailbars and can overload modern scalers (OSSC / RetroTINK).
- Tapping True Stereo from the Genesis Model 1: Solder a short 3.5mm stereo TRS pigtail lead into your SCART cable (Tip = Left -> SCART Pin 6, Ring = Right -> SCART Pin 2, Sleeve = Audio GND -> SCART Pin 4) and plug it into the front headphone jack.
