Using USB-C PD Trigger Boards (9V / 12V / 5V) in Retro Computers
The reversible 24-pin USB Type-C connector duplicates GND, VBUS, and D+/D- across Row A (A1–A12) and Row B (B12–B1), while using CC1 (A5) and CC2 (B5) to detect cable orientation and negotiate USB Power Delivery (5 V, 9 V, 12 V, 15 V, 20 V).
- For 5V-Only Retro Systems (Atari 800XL/130XE, Amstrad CPC 464): Use a 6-pin USB-C receptacle with two 5.1 kΩ resistors on CC1 and CC2 to request 5.0 V @ up to 3.0 A from any USB-C charger.
- For 9V DC Systems (ZX Spectrum 48K/128K, Commodore 16/116): Use a CH224K 9 V USB-C PD trigger module so the USB-C charger outputs regulated 9.0 V DC (eliminating the heavy linear wall wart!).
