Complete Diagnostic Flowchart: Capacitive Load, ESR & Power Rail Ripple Diagnostic Tree (Universal Retro Mainboards (C64, Amiga, ZX Spectrum, Game Gear, Consoles))
Summary
While the white Core/PC Engine and TurboGrafx-16 use a small number of radial through-hole capacitors, the black PC Engine Duo and TurboDuo contain over 55 surface-mount electrolytic capacitors that leak aggressively and eat through the 4558 CD audio op-amp vias and CD servo circuits.

Safety & Warnings
Recap every PC Engine Duo / TurboDuo immediately - even if it still works!
The SMD capacitors on the PC Engine Duo leak corrosive electrolyte that destroys the dual-layer vias under the 4558 op-amps, killing Redbook CD audio and eventually the CD drive spindle servo.
Is This Your Board?
- Original white PC Engine and black TurboGrafx-16 use through-hole radial cans around the 7805 regulator.
- PC Engine Duo and North American TurboDuo are covered in miniature silver SMD cans around the CD-ROM mechanism and headphone jack.
Verified rows are agreed by two or more independent sources. Check rows are revision-dependent or single-sourced — confirm the value against your own board before ordering.
