No-Solder EXT Bus RGB vs Internal THS7374 DIN-8 Upgrade

While the original 1987 white Japanese PC Engine (HTG-001) and North American TurboGrafx-16 (HES-TGX-01) only had an RF coaxial jack on the side/back, both consoles routed Composite Video, Stereo Audio, and unbuffered HuC6260 Analog Red, Green, Blue, and Composite Sync directly to the rear 69-pin (3×23) Expansion Bus! Later models (CoreGrafx, CoreGrafx II, SuperGrafx, PC Engine Duo/Duo-R/Duo-RX) added a 5-pin 180° DIN A/V socket carrying Composite Video and Stereo Audio (frequently upgraded by modders to an 8-pin 262° DIN for amplified RGB).

  • Why You Must Buffer HuC6260 RGB Signals: Unlike the Sega Genesis or SNES, the Hudson HuC6260 VCE chip outputs unbuffered current-mode RGB on Pins 38 (G), 39 (B), and 40 (R) directly to the rear 69-pin Expansion Bus (Pins B22, C23, A23). Never wire those pins straight to a 75 Ω TV input without a THS7314/THS7374 video amp or 2SC1815 emitter-follower buffer!
  • 69-Pin Expansion Bus Pin Summary (White PC Engine & US TurboGrafx-16): Top Row A: Pin A1 = Left Audio, Pin A21 = +5V, Pin A22 = /CSYNC, Pin A23 = Analog Red. Middle Row B: Pin B22 = Analog Green, Pin B23 = Composite Video. Bottom Row C: Pin C1 = GND, Pin C2 = Right Audio, Pin C22 = Video GND, Pin C23 = Analog Blue.
