Sega Saturn
Model 1 (VA0 / VA1) & Model 2 (VA6 - VA15) + Internal PSU — 32-Bit Dual Hitachi SH-2 + VDP1/VDP2 + SCSP mainboards
Complete Diagnostic Flowchart: Capacitive Load, ESR & Power Rail Ripple Diagnostic Tree (Universal Retro Mainboards (C64, Amiga, ZX Spectrum, Game Gear, Consoles))
Summary
Early Sega Saturn revisions (VA0 through VA5) use surface-mount electrolytic capacitors that leak and cause rolling black-and-white video, missing CD audio, or disc drive dead-spindle faults. The internal PSU also develops high ripple on the +5V and +3.3V rails.

Safety & Warnings
Discharge the 200V/400V primary capacitor on the internal Saturn PSU!
The long open-frame Saturn power supply board carries live mains voltage on its primary side.
Is This Your Board?
- Model 1 (oval power/reset buttons) uses VA0 or VA1 boards with SMD electrolytics.
- Later Model 2 (round buttons, VA6-VA15) switched back to miniature radial through-hole electrolytics on the mainboard.
Verified rows are agreed by two or more independent sources. Check rows are revision-dependent or single-sourced — confirm the value against your own board before ordering.

Recap Tips
- Pay special attention to CE24 near the Hitachi PLL clock generator IC on VA0/VA1 boards - electrolyte corrosion here knocks out the dot clock.
Related Symptoms
- Rolling black-and-white wavy video Leaking CE24 / CE38 SMD capacitors on VA0/VA1 mainboards or high ripple from the internal PSU.
