Summary
The Game Gear is the handheld that genuinely needs a recap - dead sound, a dim or dead screen and no power are all routine failures of these surface-mount electrolytics. Three boards, twenty capacitors, and the highest difficulty of any guide here.
Safety & Warnings
Check for electrolyte damage before you replace anything
Leaking surface-mount capacitors are the norm on this machine, not the exception. Inspect the pads and nearby traces under magnification, clean off any residue with isopropyl alcohol, and check continuity on the affected traces - a new capacitor on a corroded pad fixes nothing.
Surface-mount rework, not through-hole
These are SMD parts on a compact double-sided board. Use hot air or the twist-and-lift method with plenty of flux, and never lever a can off cold - the pads lift and the repair turns into a wire-jumper job.
The 820 uF on the power board is a high-value part in a small space
The power board handles the DC-DC conversion that drives the backlight. Discharge and verify before working on it, and take care with can height on the replacement - there is very little clearance in the rear housing.
Replacement style varies by board
Kit vendors supply miniature leaded radials for the main board and surface-mount style parts for the audio board. Either style works electrically as long as you get the polarity and the height right.
Confidence is mixed on this machine and the badges matter more here than anywhere else in this section. The power board rows are agreed by two independent sources. The main board rows are agreed except where noted. The sound board list comes from a single source, so every row on it is flagged.
Two sources disagree on whether the 68 uF main board part is C47 or C48. Read the silkscreen on your own board before ordering, and note that only one of the two positions exists.
Voltage ratings on this machine are unusually low - 4 V and 6.3 V parts are common. Higher ratings are safe, but watch the physical size, because there is very little room.

Is This Your Board?
- Open the unit and look along the left edge of the main board for the VA number, plus a seven-digit board number in the form 837-XXXX.
- Decisive test for this list: a single ASIC on the right-hand side of the main board. Two ASICs means an earlier VA1 variant (837-7398, 837-7719 or 837-7996) with a different list.
- This list covers the single-ASIC VA1 main boards 837-8560 and 837-9024. VA4 (837-9537) and VA5 (837-10766) boards are different again and are not covered here.
- The power and sound daughterboards sit in the rear half of the case and are largely common across the range - the exception is audio board 837-7400-01, which uses square surface-mount cans.

Recap Tips
- Do all three boards in one sitting. Reassembling a Game Gear to find the sound board still needs doing is a wasted teardown.
- Clean every pad with isopropyl alcohol and inspect under magnification before fitting new parts. Old electrolyte keeps corroding underneath a perfectly good replacement.
- If the screen is dim or dead after a full recap, the fault is usually the backlight tube or its inverter rather than the capacitors.
- This machine is a poor choice for a first recap. If you have never done surface-mount rework, practise on a scrap board first - Game Gear pads are unforgiving.
