Top 10 Classic Horror Films — Smiggy's Frightful Favourites

When I'm not elbow-deep in circuit boards, Smiggy loves nothing more than settling down in Rainhill with a classic horror film. Here are my all-time top 10 — the films that made me a lifelong horror fan.

10. Nosferatu (1922)

Max Schreck's Count Orlok is still one of the creepiest vampires ever committed to film. The shadow on the staircase scene is pure cinema.

9. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)

Raw, gritty, and absolutely relentless. Tobe Hooper created something that feels genuinely dangerous. The dinner scene is unbearable in the best way.

8. Bride of Frankenstein (1935)

James Whale's sequel surpasses the original. The pathos of the Monster, the dark humour of Pretorius, and that iconic bride reveal — perfection.

7. Suspiria (1977)

Dario Argento's technicolor nightmare. The Goblin soundtrack alone is worth the price of admission. Every frame is a painting dipped in blood.

6. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

Wes Craven's masterpiece. The concept of a killer in your dreams is genius, and Robert Englund's Freddy is iconic. The ceiling scene still gets me.

5. The Exorcist (1973)

William Friedkin's film transcends horror. It's a meditation on faith and doubt wrapped in the most terrifying possession story ever told.

4. Halloween (1978)

John Carpenter created the template. The Shape, that score, Haddonfield — pure atmosphere. Smiggy watches this every October without fail.

3. Psycho (1960)

Hitchcock broke every rule. The shower scene changed cinema forever, but it's Anthony Perkins' performance that makes this a masterpiece.

2. The Thing (1982)

Carpenter again! Rob Bottin's practical effects are still unmatched. The paranoia, the isolation, the blood test scene — flawless horror filmmaking.

1. Alien (1979)

Ridley Scott's haunted house in space. The chestburster, the air ducts, Giger's design — it's the perfect organism of horror films. Smiggy's #1 forever.
